The director Luca Guadagnino brings us a romantic drama that is made in the most complete and convincing way possible. Get to show that we should all have the opportunity to live the first mad passion of a summer love.
And that is why there could not be a better place for this story than in a town in northern Italy in the summer of 1983. (Curiously, at the stage where the first AIDS infections and their different forms of transmission began to be known. Elio, an intelligent young man of 17 years, played by a great Timothée Chalamet, who knows how to play the piano with great mastery among a lot of other things, is in full discovery of his sexuality when he meets Oliver, played by Armie Hammer, that embodies the most authentic attitude of confidence and American boldness.
Suddenly those sunny days and to a certain extent, boring of a common summer change for the attention that Elio awakens the perfect American. Soon a love story is created without judgments, without scandals or polemics, in the sexual encounter of two people who fall in love. So natural, as if it were a story of the present, the characters do not enter into conflicts for their tastes and desires and embark on a relationship that in 83 was not as assimilable as it can be today.
The director gets a true intimacy between the protagonists. Almost all physical contact is an electrifying process that transforms the protagonist from a shy child to a bold young man, to achieve the self-confidence he found in Oliver.
The bright sun reflected in the pond, the sunsets that fall through the rooms of the great house, the intellectual atmosphere that the parents of Elio give off, with the freshness of the fruit of the season, passing through the apricots, and the beauty that surrounds all the natural space where the story unfolds are the elements that have a great natural parallelism with the protagonists.
Since the previous films by Guadarnino ( Yo soy el amor" 2009 and "Blinded by the Sun" 2015) he has shown that he knows how to appreciate the beauty of the actors and turns them into something more than aesthetic objects. Becoming an explorer of the psyche of his characters and that weaves the scenes of love thus perpetuating in the memory of the public.
